Police District Advisory Council (PDAC)
The 17 District PDAC was formed during a citywide effort in the early 1990s to create Councils for the purpose of liaison between police departments and their communities. The concept of Community Policing, not only led to the formation of PDACs, but also inspired crime prevention initiatives such as Operation Sun Rise; Operation Safe Streets; Youth Violence Reduction Programs; Operation Rolling Thunder; Live Stop Program, Youth Aid Panels, Community Court, and many community outreach programs.
PDAC believes that the collaboration of area residents and businesses with Philadelphia Police is an important aspect of crime prevention and control. Neighbors and business people know their community and have a stake in its wellbeing. They can offer unique perspectives to police officers, helping contribute to problem solving within their districts. Working together in this manner leads to trust among all parties—police officers, residents, and businesses.
PDAC Sponsored Events:
- Each December, PDAC sponsors a holiday dinner for police, firefighters, and the community. This effort is supported by local merchants & prepared by PDAC members.
- Each January, PDAC coordinates “Blue Ribbon Day,” a ceremony in which the community thanks and celebrates 17th District officers who have performed beyond their duties. The officers’ valiant actions are recognized by PDAC and political representatives from the community.
- The PDAC “Beautification Committee” is concerned with making the police building and the community around it attractive and inviting. The group has cleaned the sidewalks, planted flowers, shrubs and trees around the station. Involvement with the Mural Arts Program resulted with an exciting mural for the station walls - a program named “Cops & Kids” -- designed for communication between both parties as well as something beautiful for the neighborhood.
- PDAC website facilitates the Commanding Officer’s intention to have a strong flow of information moving through the entire community so that needed action is immediately available.
